23 Things I did!

When I started the 23 things I was in the dark, but once I started it it wasn't that hard, in fact I think I've knew or done a lot of the activities while completing my degree at RMIT, and through friends I started things like Facebook, blogs, Skype etc.

No doubt about it I'm more preapred to help someone if required as part of my job in the Library, in fact I helped a few people over the past week to complete some of these activities.
Learn can't be a bad thing and learning about these new technologies keep you up to date with what happens in term of new technologies.

So overall it wasn't a bad experience and I think I enjoyed most of the activities.

Skype, MSM and Meebo

One of my lecturers at RMIT told us about Skype, basically you use Skype to talk over the Internet all around the world and to mobiles as well, it will save you heaps if you do international calls a lot, this is my case, I do call my family overseas very often but to give them a call or use the internet is basically the same in term of price.

I've never been interested in MSM I think this technology applies to the younger audience I'm happy just by having Facebook, which I don't use much either.
I've used Meebo on a training course but somehow we can't open Meebo from our workstations, so I couldn't play with it at all.

Vodcast and Podcast your favourite video or TV show

I often the World Game on SBS, and the update on football (no soccer!), I loved to see how the socceroos are doing, and of course my favourite soccer player, Harry Kewell.

Also I enjoy At The movies now on ABC, I've been watching this show since it was available on SBS, Margaret and David, don't often agree on their movies review but they give you a good insight about them before you go to the cinemas and see it for yourself.
These days you can 'Vodcast" this program and watch it whenever you want.

VUWIki and my Pet

This little fella is someone I know very well, he is our pet and I introduced him on the VuWiki page, he is a handsome little boy and we absolutely adored him.

Library 2.0 technologies

I read the article about Encore and the way 2.0 technologies are changing the way users interact with library catalogue, more than ever library users have more flexible ways to turn around ways to find information to accomodate their needs. For instance Ebscohost 2.0 platform gives the user more flexibility when doing a search dividing the search results in chunks of information easy to read and sort, the users can drag articles to one side of the panel and save it until next time. Really like it, and it looks so neat.

Delicious tags

I created a delicious account I had a look at some fotoshop editing tips and found some very good and easy to follow tutorials, so it was quite useful. Delicious can help you to follow tags, keep and add more as you need.

The Boat- Nam Le

This short stories novel are so full of real life experiences by ordinary people that I wonder if they reflect Nam Le own life experiences, the stories are so diverse and are set in different part of the world that is hard to believe they belong to one individual, I loved 'Cartagena' a story of crime, friendship drug lords and punishment set in Colombia. Fantastic book. More of the same please!

My iGoogle

If creating a website was that easy!, well you can now create your own site, and organized the way you want. I've done exactly that, but while adding new tabs for my site, I could see that it have a very distinct American feel and touch ...and I didn't like that, why for example I would like to see Melbourne weather from America in Fahrenheit degrees??.
The instructions and tips on how to do things are pretty straight forward. I added Facebook, Wikipedia and also Google Maps and it automatically gave me my Google Reader.

Google Docs, Books and Scholar

Google is taking over the planet!. I knew about Google Documents I found this interesting link from VU Library homepage :http://intranet.vu.edu.au/AEHD/web2_usersite/ this Toolbox was prepared by the Faculty of AEHD and was designed to help users to get around the web 2.0 applications such as wikis, blogs, collaborative documents and to use them for teaching and learning. Google documents is a free online editor, and enables people to share documents, this is particularly useful for students to work together for an assignment, make changes to the document until completed.

Google Books is another good resource if you want to read a few pages of a book before you buy/order it,To me I've rather go to Amazon.com.

Google scholar is good for locating journals citations and in some cases the link to where the document is available or can direct you to the source and with luck to the fulltext via document supply.

Google Maps or Big Brother?

OMG, this is so freaky!!, I'm looking at the front of my house this very minute, from every single angle.... I knew this was available and I read that it raised serious questions about privacy, because ordinary people were caught on camera unaware they were being captured by Google satellite... I think there is a very fine line between available information and privacy and this is a good example.

Facebook

I joined Facebook years ago while studying at RMIT, a friend introdroduce me to it, since then I've located family and friends as well as people from VU. I recently told my niece about it, and now she have more friend than me!,
I found a lost friend on Facebook and we both probably have a good laugh talking about the good old times.
But I must admit I don't see myself going to Facebook unless someone write something to me, maybe I'm not a 'social animal' that's all...

RSS, Google Reader and Blogs

I set up a feed reader via Google Reader and I added the things I usually read through the day, news headlines, world news, soccer, weather, feed reader could be useful if I'm interested in some news but normally I would browse the online newspaper , so I don't know how useful this could be for me, and besides the items in my reader are growing faster than expected....

I added a blog that I found interesting, 'Librarian Guide to Etiquette', I like this comment: Email sending Flames:

'It is generally not acceptable for librarians to send flaming, angry mass emails to their coworkers. Instead, try slapping your coworkers across the face. This direct, personal touch eliminates the electronic paper trail and leaves little room for misinterpretation...

Library parking

More about Flicker.

I went back to this activity, since I didn't got a mark for activity no. 6 of the 23 things. Flicker is full of images videos and other stuff. I've always look for funny pictures of Mr. GW Bush and sure enough, there is always a new good one available, so here is the link:

this picture also is available through Digg.com, so is no surprise that these sites are quite similar in content.

Library Thing and some old favourites

I really enjoyed compiling this library, which by the way is merely an handful of my old time favourites, I remember readings some of these books long time ago, and missing my bus stop because I just couldn't stop reading, nowadays I read while driving, don't panic ...I read while waiting for the traffic lights to change.
I've been back to these titles and always found domething new, is almost like an old friendship that stretches beyond time and distance.

Twilight

Bella and Edward are the new Harry Potter, well not quite right, Harry was a wizard, Bella is a 'muggler" and Edward's a vampire.... I'm not going to reveal the plot, that's for you to find out.
